Rebottled
IBC totes.

A brand-new HDPE bottle inside a cage and base that already exist. You get virgin-bottle purity without paying for virgin steel, and 44 kg of galvanised metal stays in service instead of going through a furnace. It is the answer when a specification says “new bottle” and your budget says otherwise.

Short answer

Rebottling fits a new HDPE bottle — food or industrial resin — into a shot-blasted, straightened reclaimed cage and base, with a new gasket, valve and lid. Price band $210 – $365, roughly two-thirds of a new tote. The spent bottle is granulated, not landfilled.
  • Bottle is indistinguishable from new — same resin, same mould
  • Food-grade resin certificate available
  • UN re-marking with a fresh 5-year window where it qualifies
  • 44 kg of galvanised steel kept out of a furnace per unit

The process

Five stations, and one of them is a granulator

Rebottling is the only grade where we deliberately destroy part of the container we bought. The economics only work because the destroyed part has a second life as regrind.

  1. 01

    Strip and granulate

Spent bottle drained, cut out, shredded and granulated. Roughly 52 kg of HDPE per 275-gallon unit enters the regrind stream, sorted by colour and melt index.

  2. 02

    Shot-blast the cage

Galvanised tube blasted back to clean metal, uprights pressed straight, every weld inspected. A cracked weld sends the cage to the baler instead — there is no cosmetic fix for that.

  3. 03

    Seat the new bottle

New bottle lowered in, strapped and seated. Food orders get FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 resin with the certificate retained against the serial number.

  4. 04

    New wetted parts

New gasket in the compound you specify, new valve, new lid. Every surface your product touches is new even though the container is not.

  5. 05

    Test, mark and record

Leakproofness test, then UN re-marking under our reconditioner code where the assembly qualifies, with a fresh test date rather than an inherited one.

When to choose it

Four situations where rebottled is simply correct

  • Your QA spec says "new bottle"

Common in personal care, pharma intermediates and some co-packing contracts. Rebottled satisfies the clause without buying new steel, and the resin certificate is the evidence your auditor wants.

  • Food grade, but no clean used stock

Documented food-contact used totes are genuinely scarce in some months. Rather than sell you a chemical tote with an optimistic story, we fit a new food-resin bottle.

  • You need a fresh UN window

If you are putting an asset into a five-year regulated rotation, inheriting eighteen months of someone else's service life is false economy.

  • You have cages but no bottles

Plenty of customers send us a trailer of cracked-bottle totes and get rebottled units back. Your steel, our bottles, no purchase of a container at all.

Questions

Rebottling questions

What is the difference between rebottled and reconditioned?

Reconditioned keeps the original bottle and washes it. Rebottled throws the original bottle into our granulator and fits a brand-new one, reusing the cage and base. Rebottled is cleaner and costs more; reconditioned is cheaper and has a lower carbon footprint because no new resin is moulded.

Is a rebottled tote as good as new?

The bottle is identical to new — same resin, same mould, same wall thickness. The cage and base are reclaimed, inspected and shot-blasted. For every practical purpose other than a specification that explicitly demands a virgin cage, the answer is yes, at roughly two-thirds the price.

Can a rebottled tote be food grade?

Yes, if the new bottle is moulded from FDA 21 CFR 177.1520-compliant resin, which is what we fit by default on food orders. The resin certificate travels with the unit. This is the normal route to a food-grade container when documented food-contact used stock is unavailable.

Does a rebottled tote get a new UN marking?

Where the assembly qualifies, yes — we re-mark under our own reconditioner registration code with a fresh test date. That gives you a full five-year hazmat service window rather than inheriting the remainder of someone else's.

What happens to the old bottle?

It is drained, cut, granulated and sold as regrind by colour and melt index. Roughly 52 kg of HDPE per 275-gallon unit goes back into the material stream rather than into a landfill.

Resin choice

Which bottle goes into your cage

Rebottling is only interesting because the bottle is genuinely new. Which resin we fit decides what the finished unit can legally and practically hold.

Bottle resin options for rebottled units
ResinComplianceAppearanceRight forPrice effect
Virgin HDPE, food gradeFDA 21 CFR 177.1520, certificate retainedNatural translucentFood, beverage, potable, pharma intermediatesBaseline
Virgin HDPE, industrialGeneral purposeNatural translucentChemical, ag, industrial liquids−3% – 5%

Opaque / pigmented HDPEGeneral purposeBlack or colourLight-sensitive product, algae suppression+8% – 14%
Thicker-wall bottleGeneral purposeNaturalHigh-cycle returnable pools+10% – 16%

The option most people do not know exists is the third one. If the container is going to live outdoors, a UV-stabilised bottle roughly doubles the time before crazing starts, for a single-digit percentage on the price. It is the best-value specification choice in this catalogue.

Sending us cages

What we need from you, and what you get back

Toll rebottling keeps your asset numbers and your steel. Here is the practical sequence and the information that makes it fast.

  1. 01

Send two photographs per representative unit

One upright-to-rail weld joint and one base fixing point. Those two images tell us what share of your cages are rebottling candidates, usually within a day, and they are the only pre-assessment we need.

  2. 02

Tell us the resin and the gasket

Food or industrial, UV-stabilised or not, and the product the finished unit will hold so we can specify the gasket compound. If you do not know the compound, give us the liquid name and we will choose.

  3. 03

    Ship or let us collect

Crushed-bottle units nest poorly, so expect 30 – 36 per trailer rather than 42. Collection is free above 24 units in our active lanes; below that we net the freight and show both numbers.

  4. 04

We triage on arrival and report

Each cage is assessed against the four checks. You get a count of accepted, rejected and borderline before any work starts, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

  5. 05

    Rebottle, test and re-mark

New bottle seated and strapped, new gasket, valve and lid, 3 psi leakproofness test, then UN re-marking under our reconditioner code where the assembly qualifies — giving a fresh five-year window.

  6. 06

    Return with paperwork

Same serials back where your asset tags survive, resin certificate per unit, test record, and a diversion certificate for the granulated bottles if you want the tonnage for reporting.

Have cages but no usable bottles?

That is the single best phone call we never receive, because we do not have a phone. Send the unit count and we will quote rebottling against outright purchase so you can see both numbers.
